Journal Regulations
Article 1. Purpose
These Journal Regulations establish the basic rules governing the publication, editorial management, manuscript submission, peer review, research ethics, copyright, publication fees, and general operation of the Journal of Global Arts Studies (JGAS). The purpose of these regulations is to ensure the academic quality, ethical integrity, transparency, fairness, and international standard of JGAS as a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
Article 2. Journal Title
The official title of the journal is Journal of Global Arts Studies. The abbreviated title of the journal is JGAS.
Article 3. Publisher
JGAS is published by the Korea Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (KIHSS). The publisher is responsible for supporting the stable publication, administrative operation, and academic development of the journal. However, all editorial decisions shall remain independent and shall be made by the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, and the Editorial Board in accordance with the journal’s editorial policies, peer review procedures, and publication ethics. The publisher shall not interfere with editorial decisions regarding the acceptance, rejection, revision, correction, or retraction of manuscripts.
Article 4. Aims and Scope
JGAS is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to research in global arts studies, art history and theory, visual and performing arts, design and media arts, cultural studies, cultural heritage, cultural communication and international cultural exchange, museum and curatorial studies, arts education, art management, cultural policy, intellectual property and cultural rights, creative industries, digital and emerging technologies in the arts, art and sustainable development, interdisciplinary arts research, and related fields. The journal welcomes original scholarly articles and other scholarly materials that contribute to the advancement of academic knowledge, critical debate, creative inquiry, and international research exchange in the fields of global arts and cultural studies.
Article 5. Publication Frequency and Schedule
JGAS is published quarterly, four times a year. The journal is published on the following dates each year: a. March 31; b. June 30; c. September 30; d. December 31. If necessary, special issues may be published with the approval of the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, and the Editorial Board. Special issues shall follow the same editorial, peer review, and publication ethics standards as regular issues.
Article 6. Submission Language and Publication Language
JGAS accepts initial manuscript submissions in English, Korean, or Chinese. However, the official publication language of JGAS is English. Manuscripts submitted in Korean or Chinese may proceed through the editorial screening and peer review process, but once the manuscript is accepted or conditionally accepted for publication, the author(s) must submit a complete English version of the final manuscript. The English version must accurately reflect the content, argument, data, citations, references, figures, tables, and conclusions of the reviewed manuscript. The author(s) are responsible for the quality, accuracy, and academic standard of the English translation. The final English manuscript must meet the academic writing and presentation standards of JGAS before publication.
Article 7. Article Types
JGAS may publish the following types of manuscripts: a. Research Articles; b. Review Articles; c. Case Studies; d. Essays; e. Interviews; f. Book Reviews; g. Exhibition Reviews; h. Conference Reports; i. Special Issue Articles; j. Other scholarly materials approved by the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board may determine specific requirements for each article type in the Author Guidelines. Research Articles, Review Articles, Case Studies, and Special Issue Articles shall be treated as peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Other scholarly materials may be subject to editorial assessment or external peer review depending on their nature, length, academic content, and editorial judgment.
Article 8. Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts must be submitted through the official journal submission system or by another method designated by the editorial office. Authors must follow the journal’s Author Guidelines, Submission Preparation Checklist, manuscript template, citation style, and ethical requirements. Submitted manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration by another journal, book, conference proceeding, or other publication platform.
Article 9. Submission Requirements
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts include all required information and declarations, including, where applicable: a. title, abstract, and keywords; b. author information and affiliations; c. corresponding author information; d. funding statement; e. conflict of interest statement; f. ethics approval statement; g. informed consent statement; h. AI use disclosure statement; i. data or materials availability statement; j. copyright permission for third-party materials; k. references prepared according to the journal style. Manuscripts that do not meet the basic submission requirements may be returned to authors before peer review.
Article 10. Editorial Board
JGAS shall establish an Editorial Board responsible for the academic quality, editorial direction, peer review management, ethical oversight, and publication standards of the journal.
JGAS normally operates under a co-editorial leadership system based on Co-Editors-in-Chief. The Co-Editors-in-Chief jointly perform the editorial leadership functions of the journal and are responsible for major editorial decisions in accordance with the journal’s policies. An Editor-in-Chief may be appointed where necessary, depending on the journal’s editorial structure, institutional needs, or operational requirements.
The Editorial Board may include Co-Editors-in-Chief, an Editor-in-Chief where appointed, International Editorial Board Members, Guest Editors where applicable, and other editorial roles necessary for journal operation. The Editorial Office may include a Managing Editor, English Editors, Layout Editor, Journal Designer, Online Publishing Coordinator, and other staff responsible for editorial coordination, production, language editing, layout, online publication, and metadata management.
The Co-Editors-in-Chief, and the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, shall normally serve a fixed term of three years and may be reappointed. International Editorial Board Members shall normally serve a fixed term of three years and may be reappointed.
The term of office of the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, and International Editorial Board Members shall be protected during the appointed period. They may be replaced before the end of their term only in cases of resignation, inability to perform duties, serious misconduct, conflict of interest, breach of publication ethics, or other justifiable cause approved by the publisher and the Editorial Board.
The Editorial Board may hold meetings online or offline when necessary, and at least once a year where practicable. Major editorial policy changes, appointments, ethical decisions, special issue approvals, and journal quality improvement activities shall be recorded and preserved by the editorial office.
Other matters not specified in this Article shall be managed in accordance with the journal’s editorial policies and internal operating procedures.
Article 11. Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions shall be made independently by the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, responsible editors, and the Editorial Board. The publisher, sponsoring institution, partner organization, or any external body shall not interfere with the acceptance, rejection, revision, correction, or retraction of manuscripts. Editorial decisions shall be based solely on academic quality, originality, relevance, ethical integrity, peer review results where applicable, editorial judgment, and the aims and scope of the journal.
Article 12. Initial Editorial Screening
All submitted manuscripts shall undergo initial editorial screening. The editorial office may check: a. suitability for the aims and scope of the journal; b. compliance with author guidelines; c. completeness of required submission materials; d. originality and similarity; e. ethical declarations; f. quality of academic writing; g. copyright and permission issues; h. possible research or publication misconduct. Manuscripts that are outside the scope of the journal, incomplete, improperly prepared, or in serious breach of journal policy may be rejected without external peer review.
Article 13. Peer Review
JGAS operates a double-blind peer review system for peer-reviewed scholarly articles. In principle, each peer-reviewed scholarly article shall be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the relevant field. Reviewers shall evaluate manuscripts based on originality, academic contribution, theoretical or methodological soundness, quality of analysis, use of sources, ethical integrity, clarity of presentation, and relevance to the journal. Reviewer recommendations are advisory. The final editorial decision shall be made by the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, or the responsible editor.
Article 14. Editorial Decisions
After peer review, the editorial decision may be one of the following: a. Accept; b. Minor Revision; c. Major Revision; d. Revise and Resubmit; e. Reject. When reviewer opinions are significantly different, the responsible editor may request an additional review, consult another editor, or make a decision based on editorial judgment and journal policy.
Article 15. Revision and Resubmission
When revision is requested, authors must submit a revised manuscript and a response letter explaining how reviewer and editor comments have been addressed. Revised manuscripts may be reviewed again by the original reviewers, new reviewers, or the responsible editor, depending on the extent of revision. If authors fail to submit a revised manuscript within the requested period without prior approval, the manuscript may be treated as withdrawn.
Article 16. Research Ethics
Authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial staff must comply with the journal’s Publication Ethics and Research Integrity Policy. The following acts are prohibited: a. plagiarism; b. duplicate submission; c. redundant publication; d. fabrication; e. falsification; f. data manipulation; g. image manipulation; h. inappropriate authorship; i. citation manipulation; j. undisclosed conflicts of interest; k. unethical use of AI tools; l. copyright infringement; m. breach of confidentiality. Suspected ethical violations shall be investigated according to the journal’s ethics policies and relevant international publication ethics principles.
Article 17. Use of Artificial Intelligence
Authors must disclose substantive use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies where required by the journal’s AI Ethics Policy. AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, legality, and ethical integrity of all AI-assisted content. Reviewers and editors must not upload confidential manuscripts, review materials, author information, reviewer information, or editorial correspondence to external AI tools without explicit authorization from JGAS.
Article 18. Authorship
Authorship shall be limited to individuals who have made substantial scholarly contributions to the manuscript and who agree to be accountable for the work. All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript before submission and publication. Changes in authorship after submission, including addition, removal, or rearrangement of authors, require written explanation and approval by all authors and the editorial office. Inappropriate authorship, including guest authorship, honorary authorship, gift authorship, and ghost authorship, is prohibited.
Article 19. Conflict of Interest
Authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial board members must disclose any financial, academic, institutional, personal, or professional conflict of interest that may influence the submission, review, editorial decision, or publication process. Editors or reviewers with a conflict of interest must not participate in the handling or evaluation of the relevant manuscript.
Article 20. Copyright and Open Access
JGAS follows the Copyright and Open Access Policy stated on the journal website. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use copyrighted or third-party materials, including images, artworks, photographs, archival materials, tables, figures, audio, video, and other media. The copyright status, license terms, and reuse conditions of published articles shall be clearly stated in the journal’s Copyright Notice.
Article 21. Publication Fees
Submission fees, peer review fees, article processing charges, page charges, publication fees, or other publication-related fees shall be clearly stated on the journal website. JGAS does not charge submission fees, peer review fees, membership fees, or annual fees. A publication fee is charged only after acceptance or conditional acceptance, as stated on the Publication Fees page. Any changes to publication fees must be announced transparently and shall not affect manuscripts already accepted unless otherwise specified.
Article 22. Corrections, Retractions, and Withdrawal
JGAS may issue corrections, retractions, expressions of concern, or withdrawal notices when necessary to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record. Corrections may be issued for significant errors that do not invalidate the overall findings or arguments of the article. Retractions may be issued in cases involving serious errors, plagiarism, duplicate publication, fabrication, falsification, unethical research, copyright infringement, or other serious ethical violations. The procedures for correction, retraction, and withdrawal shall follow the journal’s Corrections, Retractions, and Withdrawal Policy.
Article 23. Complaints and Appeals
Authors may submit an appeal if they believe that an editorial decision was affected by a significant error, misunderstanding, procedural irregularity, or conflict of interest. Complaints related to editorial process, peer review, publication ethics, or published content shall be handled fairly, confidentially, and in accordance with the journal’s Complaints and Appeals Policy. The final decision on appeals shall rest with the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, or an independent editor designated by the journal.
Article 24. Archiving and Preservation
JGAS shall make reasonable efforts to preserve published content and ensure long-term access to the scholarly record. The journal may use institutional repositories, journal platforms, DOI registration, metadata services, digital preservation systems, or other appropriate archiving mechanisms. Details shall be provided in the journal’s Archiving and Preservation Policy.
Article 25. Privacy and Confidentiality
JGAS shall protect the personal information of authors, reviewers, editors, readers, and users of the journal website. Submitted manuscripts, review reports, editorial correspondence, reviewer identities, and unpublished materials shall be treated as confidential. Personal information collected through the journal system shall be used only for legitimate journal-related purposes and shall not be disclosed to third parties except as required by law or journal policy.
Article 26. Special Issues
Special issues may be proposed and published with the approval of the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, and the Editorial Board. Special issue manuscripts must undergo the same editorial screening, peer review, ethical review, and publication process as regular submissions. Guest editors must comply with JGAS editorial policies, peer review procedures, conflict of interest rules, and publication ethics. The Co-Editors-in-Chief, and the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, retain final responsibility for the academic quality and ethical integrity of special issue content.
Article 27. Amendment of Regulations
These Journal Regulations may be amended by the Co-Editors-in-Chief, the Editor-in-Chief where appointed, and the Editorial Board when necessary to reflect changes in journal operations, publication ethics, indexing standards, legal requirements, or international scholarly publishing practices. The most recent version of these regulations shall be made available on the JGAS website.
Article 28. Supplementary Provisions
Matters not specified in these regulations shall be handled in accordance with the journal’s policies, Editorial Board decisions, relevant publication ethics guidelines, and generally accepted standards of scholarly publishing.
