Abstract

Background: Paper picture books are still a very important way for preschoolers to learn, drawing children's interest in reading in the form of pictures and texts. It also provides a knowledge reserve learning platform for preschoolers. Objective The purpose of this study is to improve children’s emotional experience by seeking ways to educate children’s social emotions through picture books, which meet UNESCO’s needs for children’s social emotion learning education. Methods: Summarize the theoretical knowledge of children's picture book function, explain the necessity of emotional experience, and construct an emotional experience explanation model. Through the case analysis of traditional Korean and Chinese cultural picture books, we analyze how the elements (sensory experience, interaction experience, cognitive experience) necessary in the explanatory model of children's picture books are expressed.
Results: The results of the study not only provide children’s emotional experience needs through these three picture book emotion design elements but also meet Unesco’s social emotion education requirements for preschoolers.
Conclusion: No matter how technology changes when designing and making children's picture books, it can convey emotions according to these three emotional experience elements, so that readers can increase participation and emotional experience.
